Hardcore Training Feature: The Weak Are Prohibited!

What is powerbuilding you ask?
The simple answer is that it’s a combination of bodybuilding and powerlifting where the goal is to add lean muscle mass with the strength to match.
A powerbuilder therefore may chose to compete in either sport but one does not need to compete in anything simply to have the goal of building strength & muscular size.
Stereotypically many bodybuilders are known for ripped physiques but are relatively weak in comparison to powerlifters that compete in the squat, bench press and deadlift. Likewise a lot of powerlifters tend to look “out of shape” when compared to their bodybuilding counterparts.
Powerbuilding training on the other hand makes bodybuilding synonymous with strength. With this workout philosophy you’ll mesh hypertrophy training and strength training by using heavy compound movements and insane workout intensity.
Does it work? Decide for yourself as I showcase my top 5 powerbuilders of all time below:
It’s true, Arnold started as a competitive powerlifter, having won a couple meets between 166-1968. He later went on to win his first Mr. Olympia bodybuilding title in 1970. I first heard about this from my buddy Mehdi over at StrongLifts but don’t take my word for it, read what Arnold wrote himself in his biography.
“American magazines wrote about the split routine as if it were my secret: it became the big thing. Everybody thought that was how I’d grown as much as I had in such a short time ….. From the beginning, I was a believer in the basic movements, because that was Reg Park’s preference. I was doing heavy squats, heavy bench presses, and this provided some of the foundation work of my body, which has always made me appear strong.
Certain bodybuilders lack that look. They have good bodies but they don’t appear powerful. The reason is inadequate foundation training. Reg Park had been a powerlifter; he had done squats with 600 pounds, bench presses with 500 pounds and dead lifts of over 700 pounds. I saw no reason why I shouldn’t continue in the same groove.”
– Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Education of a Bodybuilder
Nicknamed the world’s strongest bodybuilder Johnnie Jackson placed 11th in the 2003 Mr. Olympia competition and regularly competes in powerlifting meets. He is a big advocate of power training to build muscle mass. There may be bigger bodybuilders but there are few that have the muscle thickness and density of Johnnie O. Jackson.
Some of his big lifts include a 545 LB Bench Press, 215 LB Barbell Curl, 825 LB Squat, and an 805 LB Deadlift which he has pulled in competition.
The late Chuck Sipes was a huge, thickly muscled man, not too tall but amazingly compact and massive. He had a ruggedness written over his physiognomy and a broad grin for everyone. He reflected a cheerful atmosphere and personal attitude wherever he went.
However, when he began a workout, his concentration was so laser-focused that it was obvious to those around him that he did not want to be interrupted. It was this frame of mind that netted him contest-winning results at the elite IFBB professional level.
Chuck attained a peak condition where, at 5 feet 9 ½ inches, he weighed 220 pounds. His measurements were: arms, 19 ½ inches; chest, 50 inches; waist, 32 inches; thighs 25 ½ inches; calves, 18 inches. He was especially known for his massive and powerful forearms, which measured 18 inches pumped. Sipes was also enormously strong. He could bench press 570 pounds (at 220 pounds of muscular bodyweight), perform full squats with 600 pounds, and do barbell curls with 250 pounds.
Big Ron is an 8 Time Mr. Olympia! Not only is he tied with Lee Haney for the most Mr. Olympia wins in pro bodybuilding history but he lifts heavy weight. I mean real heavy weight. Actually he likes to yell out “Ya Buddy, Light Weight” as he reps out with 200 lbs dumbbell presses or 800 lbs deadlifts or 800 lbs squats. He doesn’t do this in the “off-season” but rather weeks before a bodybuilding show. You have to see this mass monster for yourself in the video below.
Steve Davis – a former AABA Mr. California, IFBB Mr. World Champion used a powerbuilding system over three decades ago to achieve what many in the bodybuilding world considered at the time to be the absolute maximum in muscularity and muscle size.
Steve knew how to use heavy weights without sacrificing any muscle definition.
