Proper breathing technique is essential to vibrant, vital health. It is also a key component of an effective fitness and weight loss regime. Breathing properly reduces sympathetic stress and balances your autonomic nervous system.
Warning... with the following scientific explanation, I may cause you to have flashbacks of your high school bio teacher... and if your like me, the memories aren't too good!
So anyway, let me explain...
Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a branch of your nervous system that is responsible for all of the functions going on in your body that you don't need to think about. Your heart rate, for example is controlled by the ANS. You don't need to remind your heart to beat faster when you are exercising... at least I hope not!
The ANS has two parts that must stay balanced, like a seesaw. One part is your Sympathetic (fight or flight) branch and the other is the Parasympathetic (rest & digest) branch. These
two branches are essential to your survival, but when there is an imbalance between them you are headed for trouble.
In our fast-paced, high stress culture many of us have a very Sympathetically Overloaded nervous system. When this, fight or flight branch is stimulated your body releases "stress hormones". Stress hormones make you fat. They cause you to sacrifice muscle tissue and to store body fat.
Many of us have sympathetic overload all day long 7 days a week. Many times these are the same people who are in the gym 7 days a week and have not lost any weight. Sometimes, they even gain weight, even though they are working out so hard.

By stopping to breathe, and breathe with proper technique, you cause your Parasympathetic Branch to become active. This results in a decrease in the Sympathetic stimulation. It also means that the Parasympathetic branch will release it's own hormones. These are called Anabolic Hormones.
